Here is a basic outline of the two kinds of sonnets. The first is article is from sparknotes, and the second is from poets.org. Read both of these articles and take notes. You can use the notes you take on the quiz.
To get a feel for the sonnet form, read some of these pop songs that have been turned into a sonnet. Some of my favorites are Beyonce's "Single Ladies" and Smashmouth's "Allstar". This sonnet is another favorite. If you don't know the last one, you can watch the video of it here.
Read sonnet 18 and work through paraphrasing. Also rewrite the work in the boxes for iambic pentameter. Notice the pronouns for sonnet 18. Complete the same work for sonnet 130. The rhythm of this sonnet has two areas of complexity. Why do you think these areas are broken? Pay attention to colors in this sonnet. Which are emphasized and which are down played? Why do you think that is?
In each sonnet, Shakespeare deals with a problem, and then offers a new insight. This change is called a volta. What is the problem in each sonnet and how does he give new insight after the volta.
